Frequently Asked Questions about the Summer Institute for Early Career Teachers




Who is eligible to apply?

Candidates must have 2-5 years of full-time, lead teaching experience and a minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. They must be teaching in an independent or international school at the time of their application and be planning to teach in one the following school year.

How long is the program and when does it meet?

The program lasts two weeks and is usually held during the last two weeks of June.  For 2017, students must arrive the afternoon of Monday, June 19th and will depart the morning of Sunday, July 2.  Please note that students must be present for all days of the Institute.

When are the admissions deadlines?

Applications are due by January 15 each year for the following summer. Applications for summer 2018 will be due January 15, 2018.  You can complete the Contact Us form to request email notification when the application becomes available.

What is a fellowship? Are scholarships or financial aid available?

The Klingenstein Summer Institute for Early Career teachers is a merit-based fellowship. All participants receive a full scholarship that covers the costs of tuition and room and board. Travel to and from the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, NJ where the Institute is held is not part of the fellowship. Your school may choose to support your fellowship by covering your transportation costs.

Is housing available?

All participants are housed in the dormitories of the Lawrenceville School at no cost as part of the fellowship.

When will I be notified of an admissions decision?

Notifications of admissions decisions are sent via email by mid-April. Eligible candidates who are not admitted are encouraged to reapply for the following year. Summer Institute admission cannot be deferred. Instructions for enrollment are included in your admission decision email. Students are expected to attend all day and evening sessions of the program.

Are there special requirements for international applicants?

Yes. 

  • International applicants must hold the equivalent of a U.S. baccalaureate degree in order to be eligible for admission to Teachers College. Transcripts must be submitted for an equivalency evaluation.
  • Applicants whose undergraduate degree was from an international institution where the language of instruction was not English may be required to achieve a successful score on the TOEFL or IELTS exam.

May I submit additional letters of reference?

Yes. It is fine to submit additional letters of reference from colleagues and Klingenstein alumni who know your work from a variety of perspectives. Up to three letters can be submitted as part of the online application. Please send supplemental letters of recommendation directly to the Klingenstein Center.

Is an interview a required component of the application?

An interview is not required.

Why am I applying to Teachers College? Will I earn graduate credit?

The Summer Institute for Early Career Teachers is an official academic course of Columbia University's Teachers College. Upon successful completion of the program, students earn four points of graduate credit from Teachers College. Official transcripts may be requested from the Registrar's Office.
