Project

ADHD as a 24-Hour Disorder: A High School Intervention for Circadian and Academic Functioning

project summary

In high school, adolescents with ADHD are less likely to receive care in clinic settings. This is partly due to logistic barriers to care and high perceived stigma. Sleep disturbances such as circadian dysfunction (e.g., when internal clocks are not synced with the environment) escalate among adolescents with ADHD and are associated with poorer attention and academic challenges. Further, academic challenges often impact bedtimes. This study proposes to develop and test a new intervention for adolescents with ADHD that targets sleep and academics in a more accessible setting (i.e., a virtual school-based program) using a pilot randomized controlled trial design. The intervention will be developed using key components from existing treatments selected by an expert panel, and input from students, parents, and school staff. Further, we will test the intervention using a multiple method and multi-informant design.
